From the point-of-view of the CEO, the Director of HR should be at least equal to the CFO" says Jack Welch in his book Winning.A lot of folks are puzzled by this statement. How could people responsible for hiring, timesheets, holiday requests, job specifications, 401K forms, and mind-numbing memos be held in such high regard? You see, we have been conditioned to think of the HR in such a fashion. We tend to forget their critical role in maximizing the return on human capital and minimizing the financial risk to the company.Well I am going to jump on Jacks bandwagon. I say that Project Managers are the third most important people in any organization. What, are you crazy?! many people have responded. Project Managers just produce Gantt charts, pester everyone about tasks, call endless meetings, and send follow-up memos copying the whole team. They are just ego maniacs whose sole role is to play around in Microsoft Project and plaster lengthy project plans on the walls of their offices in a 2.5 font. Like the HR professional the Project Manager is given little acknowledgment in the value they can bring to the organization. So, lets step back for a minute and ask ourselves what is a project manager? I would contend that a project manager gets work done. He or she gets it done with team members and other resources available. They push hard for the correct projects to be worked on, maintain their common sense (a talent not to be dismissed in the workplace), and above all bring passion and enthusiasm to achieve results no matter how dire the circumstances. What Im saying is that a project manager executes the strategy of the organization. Wow, so this person has direct influence in making or breaking a company. Now thats an important role. In fact, its got to be at least the third most important role in the organization. For Project Managers: You have to make sure that you are working on the right projects (those that support the corporate strategy). You have to make sure that you have adequate resources to execute the project. You have to ensure that the requirements and scope are controlled, that risks are identified and managed, and that you are proactive and not reactive in your approach to managing the project. You have to have passion and desire to do the job and inspire others in your team. You can have a huge impact on the success of the company. You are the third most important person in your organization. That is a great honor and with it comes great responsibility. If this is not you, get out and let someone else in. Its that critical for you and the organization. For non-Project Managers: (This includes sponsors, resource managers, users, and clients). Dont get your project managers to work on non-strategic, non value adding projects. Make sure adequate resources are made available. Make sure you support and champion the project manager. Remember, project managers can make it happen. Be clear with your requirements. Have realistic expectations (dont have hundreds of projects on the go at once) and free yourself from thinking that project managers are overhead. If you have a skilled and motivated project manager in place, amazing results can occur. So change the work environment to support the success of projects and play your part in making a difference. Remember, the fourth most important role in the organization is up for grabs. With over 17 years of project consulting experience, Vijay Aluwalia is actively engaged with clients in a project and change management capacity, and focuses on coaching leadership and management teams.

Who Has the Third Most Important Role in the Organization by Vijay Aluwalia (VARUNE).pdf
Feed

© 2011 VARUNE Project Leadership | Phone: (609) 799-4747 | info_varune.com
