They make the strategies and goals developed by the senior leadership come to life. They drive the changes that take the organization to the next level. Those leading these projects carry a very heavy responsibility on their shoulders. And when we find ourselves within a recessionary climate, the importance of project leadership becomes magnified. So, should anything change when managing projects in a recession? In my opinion, the answer is yes. Although you may have no control on a recession setting in, you can directly and successfully impact the following Four-Re Factors.Economic REcessionDelivering Critical Business REsultsUnwavering Allocation of REsourcesKey Team Member REtentionStrengthening Customer RElationshipsIn fact these four factors are part of the everyday project environment. But the difference in a recession is the intensity and focus on these factors.Let's explore some additional thoughts and questions around each of the Four-Re Factors:1. Delivering Critical Business ResultsWhich projects are must do and focus on short-term survival and/or deliver a significant competitive advantage? How is this must do criteria defined, agreed to and communicated throughout the organization? What actions must occur to ensure these projects are successfully implemented and project benefits realized? How are other projects going to get cancelled or suspended? How is the urgency and importance related to these projects maintained?2. Unwavering Allocation of ResourcesWhich activities (outside of the must do projects) are resources expending time on? How will distractions be eliminated and whose support is needed to make this stick? What red tape needs to be eliminated? Who has the formal authority and informal influence of the available resources? Who do team members willingly follow? How can resources be committed and be protected for the project duration?3. Key Team Member RetentionWho are the top performers? How are they being utilized? What career management expectations need to be set or revisited to keep them in-house? How will they relate to the longer term vision of the organization and do they feel connected and integral to this? What stresses and strains are they under within the tough environment? What nurturing, coaching, motivation and flexibility can be employed to support individual satisfaction and project performance?4. Strengthening Customer RelationshipsWhat impact is the recession having on customers? What ground level intelligence do you need to get a clear picture of the direction customers are heading? How can you provide comfort and flexibility that allows a win-win situation? Is your behavior vulture-like and not in the interests of the customer? How can trust be increased? What additional insights or relationships can you bring to the table that will help the client? Its not comfortable or easy working within a recession. And things will not be any better (and in fact far worse) following a recession if a more intense and focused view is not taken on projects that the organization undertakes. Project leaders need to be bold, fight for the changes that need to occur and influence all the factors mentioned above at all times. With over 17 years of project consulting experience, Vijay Aluwalia is actively engaged with clients in a project and change management capacity, and focuses on coaching leadership and management teams.
Feed

© 2011 VARUNE Project Leadership | Phone: (609) 799-4747 | info_varune.com
